The Lühike jalg Gate is one of the most important defensive gates of Tallinn’s Old Town, located on Lühike jalg Street and leading up to Toompea Hill. Built beneath a medieval tower, these gates long marked the boundary between the Lower Town and the Upper Toompea fortress. Since the Swedish rule, they were also called the “Swedish Gate,” as they provided access to the Swedish-administered Toompea. In the evenings, the gates used to be locked, and today they remain as an important historical monument – like a silent guardian keeping the secrets of Tallinn’s past.
