Kauko Stairs – a favorite spot for both locals and visitors of Kaunas, where the extraordinary beauty of nature meets a touch of mysticism. While climbing the stairs connecting the city center of Kaunas with Žaliakalnis, you’re unlikely to encounter Kaukas, the mythical creature. However, the feeling that this legendary being is watching you from afar may linger as you admire the breathtaking natural views.
The History of Kauko Stairs and What Makes Them Special Today
Kauko Stairs in Kaunas were built in 1936 and have since become one of the city's major attractions. Both locals and visitors alike have chosen this nature-surrounded spot for long walks, romantic dates, and quality family time. The stairs have also been a popular destination due to the legends associated with them. One of the most well-known tales suggests that this place is the domain of the mythical hero, Kaukas.
Today, Kauko Stairs welcome visitors with a much-improved appearance. In 2019, the stairs connecting the central part of Kaunas with Žaliakalnis were fully reconstructed, while retaining their uniqueness. The authentic granite steps have been preserved, and restored handrails on both sides ensure safety and comfort for people of all ages. At the top, after the final step, visitors are greeted by a granite-paved terrace, where benches allow for a pleasant rest while enjoying the stunning natural landscape that provides a true feast for the eyes. The square’s pride is the preserved sculpture "Rest," along with fountains that spurt from the pavement during the warmer months, bringing joy to children. In the evening, the stairs are illuminated by lamps on both sides of the path, so the oasis of peace and relaxation can be visited even at night. An important feature of Kauko Stairs are the two mythical Kaukas footprints, climbing the hill. These sculptures were created by the renowned sculptor Artūras Žilinskas to remind everyone that Kauko Stairs is a special, somewhat mystical place, and perhaps the Kaukas himself is nearby.
