Lakinskų Hillfort

The Lakinskų Hillfort is situated on a promontory on the right bank of the Šešupė River. Historian J. Basanavičius speculated that a wooden castle once stood on the hillfort, which was burned down by the Teutonic Knights in 1381. It is also said that a stone located on the hillfort's plateau was used for maintaining an eternal flame in honor of Perkūnas. Legends tell of a church that once stood on the hillfort and later sank into the ground. It is believed that this church sank after a stone with an imprint of a "human foot" in the middle of the plateau. According to the story, if someone tried to roll the stone off the hillfort, it would be back in its original place by morning.
