The museum was established on February 19, 1990 (it was known as the Lithuanian Museum of Technology until February 1, 1995). It is located in Kaunas, Aleksotas, within the territory of the S. Darius and S. Girėnas Aerodrome. The predecessor of LAM, the Public Museum of Sports Aviation, was initiated by Lithuanian aviators in 1971 and officially opened in 1983.

Since 1991, the museum's branches have included the restored homesteads of S. Darius and S. Girėnas, thanks to the efforts of aviator Vytautas Pakarskas. These sites feature memorial exhibits that commemorate the transatlantic flight, enhanced with ethnographic artifacts from the Žemaitija region.

The museum houses over 20,000 exhibits (including more than 40 aircraft), with an exhibition area covering 4,700 square meters. Large aircraft and fire rescue service equipment are displayed in an open-air area of 2 hectares. The museum's specialized library contains about 19,000 publications. A highlight of the collection is a flying replica of the legendary "Lituanica," constructed by renowned aviator Vladas Kensgaila in 1982 for the film "Flight Across the Atlantic." The museum also boasts an impressive collection of Lithuanian and locally used gliders, prominently featuring the works of Bronius Oškinis. The exhibits
include sport aircraft used in Lithuania, military aircraft from the Lithuanian and Polish Air Forces, and helicopters from the Air Force and State Border Guard Service. Visitors can see the An-2 airplane, a participant in the "Baltic Way," and explore a collection of aviation engines, aircraft models, historical photographs, and other museum treasures. They can also sit in the cockpit trainers of the An-2 aircraft and Mi-8 helicopter. The museum features a symbolic crypt for S. Darius and S. Girėnas and a room dedicated to the memory of Antanas Gustaitis. There is also an exhibit on the history of firefighting.
