The church was built in 1615 with funds from the Samogitian elder Jurgis Gruževskis. It is one of the most beautiful remaining buildings in Lithuania featuring a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. The church has a single nave and a single tower, with a Gothic three-sided apse and Gothic windows. The proportions of the building are elongated both in length and height. Inside the church, the Gothic cross vaults with plaster ribs and molded plaster rosettes have been preserved, as well as Renaissance pilaster capitals. Above the triumphal arch separating the presbytery, the Gruževskis noble family's coat of arms is embedded. The tower of Kelmė church once housed a clock, parts of which have survived to this day.
