The Russalka Memorial is one of Tallinn’s most famous monuments, erected in 1902 in Kadriorg Park. It was created by Estonian sculptor Amandus Adamson to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the sinking of the warship “Russalka” (“Mermaid”). The ship sank in 1893 on its way to Finland, taking the lives of 177 sailors. This was the first monument in Estonia created by a professional Estonian sculptor. The memorial depicts an angel holding an Orthodox cross, directed toward the Baltic Sea – the presumed site of the tragedy. It is believed that the model for the angel was the sculptor’s housemaid. Today, the memorial serves not only as a historical remembrance but also as one of the most visited landmarks in Tallinn, with its symbolism often used in art and cultural projects.
