Patarei Naval Fortress in Tallinn

Located in Tallinn’s Kalamaja district, Patarei fortress was built in 1840 by order of the Russian Tsar. Later turned into barracks, it served as a prison from 1919 to 2002. During Soviet and Nazi occupations, it became notorious for brutal crimes. Today, it hosts the “Communism is Prison” exhibition, highlighting totalitarian crimes and the site's dark past. Since 2020, restoration is turning Patarei into a modern urban space with a museum, commercial and residential areas, and leisure venues—planned for completion by 2026.
