In Palanga, on Vytauto Street, near the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, stands a monument to General Jonas Žemaitis-Vytautas. This granite work, resembling a partisan tent, was created by sculptor J. Jagėla, and the fir tree planted at its base symbolizes the forests that protected Lithuania’s partisans. The monument was unveiled in 2004 to honor Jonas Žemaitis (1909–1954), the chairman of the Presidium of the Lithuanian Freedom Movement Council and a retired brigadier general. The monument's establishment was initiated by P. Gabrėnas, former chairman of the Palanga branch of the Union of Political Prisoners and Deportees. In 2009, the title of Honorary Citizen of Palanga was bestowed upon General Jonas Žemaitis, commemorating his contribution to Lithuania’s freedom struggles.
