Monument to Jonas Basanavičius

In Palanga, on Vytauto Street, stands a monument to Jonas Basanavičius, unveiled in 2002. The bronze bust, created by sculptor J. Zikaras, honors the 19th-century national revival figure, a signatory of the Act of February 16, and a member of the Lithuanian National Council. The monument is particularly special as Basanavičius himself posed for the bust.
Jonas Basanavičius was a frequent visitor to Palanga, especially after 1923, when the resort became an important meeting place for state and cultural figures. In 1922, he wrote his first study, "From the History of Palanga," and in 1924, while resting in Palanga, one of the resort's streets was named after him. This monument is a symbol that honors Basanavičius' contribution to Lithuanian culture, history, and the pursuit of independence.
