Independence Square in Rokiškis is one of Lithuania’s most distinguished examples of classical urban planning, shaped in the late 18th century under the Tyzenhauz family’s governance. Historically, the square served as the town’s vibrant hub, hosting markets, cultural events, and community gatherings. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it was surrounded by various shops and establishments, reflecting its role as the town’s economic and social center.

An interesting detail from the 20th century is the presence of two taxi stands in the square: one for traditional horse-drawn carriages, or "lineikas," and another for modern automobiles operated by brothers Romas and Balys Zizai. Known for their ingenuity, the brothers famously fueled their cars with alcohol instead of gasoline, a cost-saving but illegal practice at the time. Despite this, it is said that law enforcement struggled to detect the difference. Today, Independence Square remains a significant cultural and historical landmark in Rokiškis. It continues to host celebrations and events, inviting visitors to connect with the town's rich history and architectural heritage.
