In 1938, sculptor Gabrielius Stanulis created a monument to the Grand Duke Vytenis of Lithuania, which was erected in a military compound. The monument stood for two years until the Soviet occupation began in 1940. At that time, a Soviet airborne division settled in the battalion area, and the monument was demolished and destroyed.
After 1993, when the Soviet Army withdrew from Lithuania, efforts began to preserve this historical and cultural heritage. In March 2009, the monument was reconstructed on the same site — an island in a pond. The restoration work was carried out by sculptor Julius Narušis, thereby bringing this significant cultural symbol back to the public space.
