On January 6, 1993, a monument to the Lithuanian literary classic Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas was unveiled in the square of the Marijampolė Petras Kriaučiūnas Public Library. This impressive work was created by sculptor Alfonsas Ambraziūnas, who "immortalized the writer's spiritual world and creative legacy in metal." The project was designed by architect Valentinas Medelis.
Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, a renowned Lithuanian poet and prose writer, was also a literary historian, philosopher, and translator. In 1909, he graduated from the Marijampolė Gymnasium. The writer was famous for his symbolist poetry and the novel "Altorių šešėlyje" (In
the Shadow of the Altars). This novel, the first in Lithuanian literature to reveal the life of priests and the experiences of a young priest in the early 20th century, was published in 1933 and became immensely popular.
The novel’s exceptional success was partly because the author, being a priest himself, mirrored his hero’s fate—he left the priesthood and married in 1935. At the unveiling of the monument, the priest-poet Juozas Barkauskas noted: "He is the Prometheus of our literature. He ignited the fire of his spirit and left it behind, but he also left the steadfastness of the Lithuanian spirit—quiet, calm, yet enduring all storms."
