A monument to Vladas Putvinskis-Pūtvis, the founder and first leader of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union, has been erected in Kelmė. The monument was established to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the restoration of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union.
The author of the monument is V. Putvinskis's grandson, architect Stasys Pūtvis.
In 1919, V. Putvinskis, along with like-minded individuals, founded the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union and served as its chairman from 1919 to 1922. For his contributions to the restoration and consolidation of Lithuania's independence, he was awarded the Order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas, II degree, in 1928.
