The Student Battalion Monument in Cēsis commemorates the march of June 6, 1919, when a company of student volunteers from the Cēsis Regiment set off to the front in Latvia’s War of Independence. The culmination of these battles—the Battle of Cēsis, in which joint Estonian and Latvian forces defeated the German Landeswehr and Iron Division—is considered one of the most significant events in Latvia’s fight for independence. The monument was erected in 1938, demolished during the Soviet era, and restored in 1992 by sculptor Maija Baltiņa. Today, on November 11th—Lāčplēsis Day—a solemn torchlight procession is held at the monument to honor those who fought for Latvia’s freedom.
