In the village of Pabartupis, there stands a monument to the Lithuanian partisan Juozas Lukša-Daumantas, who died here on September 4, 1951, after falling into an MGB ambush. He was a representative of the Lithuanian Freedom League abroad, actively fought for independence, led the Birutė detachment of the Tauro military district, and edited partisan publications. After returning to Lithuania in 1950, he continued the struggle, and his bravery was recognized with the highest awards. Streets, a gymnasium in Garliava, and a memorial dedicated to him bear his name, and the monument, listed in the Register of Cultural Heritage of Lithuania, preserves his memory.
