A unique piece of street art honoring the memory of renowned Lithuanian poet Alfonsas Nyka-Niliūnas has been unveiled in Utena. The artwork, created by Tadas Šimkus, seamlessly integrates the poet’s figure into the city’s architecture, with a color palette reflecting the historical and cultural context. This mural not only commemorates the significance of literature but also fosters a dialogue about values in the modern world.

The impressive mural pays tribute to one of the most prominent 20th-century Lithuanian émigré poets. It highlights the importance of literature in our lives, while the subtle design harmonizes with Utena’s architectural environment. The artist emphasized how the form and content of the mural aligned unexpectedly well, with the poet’s figure blending elegantly into the urban setting. The mural’s colors resonate with the cityscape, symbolizing history, the poet’s modesty, and cultural identity. The artist expressed joy that the mural portrays a person holding a book, serving as a counterbalance to today’s digital world. He hopes it will inspire an appreciation for literature and encourage the preservation of the values promoted
by Nyka-Niliūnas. The creation process received strong community support, ranging from compliments to practical gestures, such as hot drinks from a café or even an offer of a live sheep. On December 11, the mural was officially presented at the Utena A. and M. Miškiniai Public Library. During the event, Vilnius University graduate student Emilija Blockutė discussed the poet’s connection to both global and local cultures, while Utena’s youth theater group Atbulai performed interpretations of Nyka-Niliūnas’ work, leaving a profound impression on the audience. The project, “Street Art Inspired by Utena,” was funded by the Utena District Municipality as part of its cultural and tourism development initiatives.
