Valley of the Crosses of the Baltic Way

On August 23, 1989, during the Baltic Way event, the communities of Pasvalys and Joniškėlis, together with neighbors from Pakruojis and guests from Kretinga, Akmenė, and Mosėdis, erected the first crosses as symbols of freedom and determination. These actions were inspired by the words of writer Kazys Saja, who urged everyone to contribute to the erection of monuments by carrying a stone as a symbol of their captivity or a bag of soil to create an ancient burial mound, or even a cross. This became a symbol not only of freedom but also of significant historical moments. Today, 14 crosses stand in this valley, each commemorating important historical dates for the community and the entire country.
