In 1926, when Panevėžys became the center of the diocese, an impressive cathedral was built within three years, distinguished by its neo-baroque architectural features. The facade is adorned with magnificent sculptures, each nearly three meters high, depicting Pope Pius XI and Archbishop Jurgis Matulaitis-Matulevičius. The interior of the cathedral features a three-nave space with reinforced concrete cylindrical vaults decorated by artist Povilas Puzinas. The main altar showcases a statue of Christ the King, created by the renowned Lithuanian sculptor Juozas Zikaras. Beneath the presbytery, a spacious chapel, hall, and crypts have been arranged, including the resting place of the first Bishop of Panevėžys, Kazimieras Paltarokas. In 1930, the cathedral was solemnly consecrated by Prelate Jonas Mačiulis-Maironis, and today it remains one of the most significant religious and cultural landmarks in Panevėžys.
