Founded in 1925, the Panevėžys Regional Museum stands as a vital cultural and historical center in the city. It houses five departments: Education and Information, Ethnic Culture, History, Collections Management and Protection, and Restoration and Conservation. The museum also oversees two branches: the Soviet Occupation Resistance and Sąjūdis Movement Exhibit (established in 2004) and the Oldest Building in Panevėžys – the Upytė Nobility Exhibit (established in 1972). The museum is located in Panevėžys's oldest surviving building, constructed in 1614 as the archive for the Upytė district court. Remarkably, it is also Lithuania’s oldest preserved archival
building. The museum’s collection boasts over 120,000 artifacts, encompassing archaeology, numismatics, ethnography, natural history, and photography. More than just a repository of historical treasures, the museum plays an active role in the city’s cultural life by organizing educational programs, conferences, and events. In 2019 alone, it welcomed 16,568 visitors. By 2020, its collections had grown to over 116,400 exhibits. The museum’s establishment was spearheaded by cultural figures Petras Bliumas, P. Būtėnas, J. Elisonas, Jonas Moigis, and Vladas Rozmanas, reflecting a shared commitment to preserving and celebrating the region’s heritage.
