On May 4, 1948, in Gerviškės village, during intense battles with units of the MGB Chekist army, partisans from the Dainava district’s Šarūnas battalion fought for Lithuania's independence. Among them was the commander of the first squad, Antanas Radžiukynas, known by his nom de guerre Nevėžis, born in 1919 in Leipalingys, now located in the Lazdijai district. Also killed was squad leader Jonas Leščinskas, whose nom de guerre was Skroblas, born in 1919 in Neliuboniai village, and section commander Albinas Ramanavičius, known as Balandis, born in 1921 in Kučiūnai village, which is also currently part of the Lazdijai district. These battles testify not only to the partisans' determination but also to Lithuania's historical struggle for freedom.
