On October 20, 1947, Petras Vilkelis-Barzdukas became the commander of the 1st squad of the DLK Vytenis Group of the Šarūnas Battalion. After the death of Jurgis Ptakauskas-Liepa on December 14, 1947, he was appointed commander of the entire group (which later became a battalion). On August 15, 1948, he was promoted to the rank of junior sergeant.
On March 9, 1949, in the home of Leonas and Ona Paliutis in Smališkės village, P. Vilkelis-Barzdukas was killed after the location of their bunker was betrayed (the source being a captured partisan named Uola). His comrades-in-arms, P. Žakevičius-Tautmylis, B. Sadauskas-Galiūnas, and J. Jančė-Džiaugsmelis, also fell that day. On the same day, J. Barkauskas-Vėjūnas and B. Sotnikas-Milžinas were killed nearby. A song titled “Ko nuliūdai, brangi Dzūkija” was created about their fight.
In 1947, P. Vilkelis' mother and his children were deported to Siberia. Other family members were deported in 1953.
