In the Kalniškė Forest, on May 16–17, 1945, one of the most significant battles of the Lithuanian partisans against the Soviet occupying army took place. About 100–120 partisans from the Dainava district, led by Jonas Neifaltas-Lakūnas, clashed with the larger forces of the NKVD's 220th Border Regiment. Despite being outnumbered, the partisans managed to break through the encirclement, but over 40 fighters lost their lives. Among the deceased were notable fighters such as Adomas Alesius, Petras Austrevičius-Kurtas, Jonas Ažukas, and Jurgis Balčiūnas-Ugnis. The bodies of the fallen were discarded by the Lazdijai-Krosna road and were later reburied in the Simnas cemetery during the period of national revival. This site in the Kalniškė Forest holds significant importance for Lithuanian history and serves as a symbol of the struggle for freedom.
