On April 3, 1947, intense battles took place in Stankūnai village with units of the Chekist army, during which Juozas Gylys, better known by his nom de guerre Putinas, a partisan from the Dainava district’s Šarūnas battalion, was killed. He was born on April 3, 1923, in Nemajūnai village, now part of the Lazdijai district. Also killed in these battles was Stasys Mirijauskas, known as Tarzanas, a partisan from the Tauras district’s Perkūnas battalion, who hailed from Marijampolė County, now also located in the Lazdijai district. These fights reflect the partisans' dedication and determination for freedom, an essential part of our history.
