Church of the Ascension of Christ and Bell Tower in Utena

The exact details of the first Utena church are unclear, but in 1522, it received a tithe from the Utena and Užpaliai estates. The older Church of the Holy Cross was wooden, and a new church was built in 1802, which burned down in 1879. The brick church, designed by architect S. G. Lukaševičius, was completed in 1884 and consecrated in 1898. A brick bell tower was built beside it, funded by landowners A. Balcevičius, F. Jaloveckis, and C. Svionteckis. This church and bell tower complex is listed in the Register of Cultural Heritage. In the churchyard, a roofed column and a memorial wall honor partisans, those who died in Soviet labor camps, and exiles. In front of the church stands a monument to Independence, and nearby are the old Utena cemeteries, with 17th-century graves and burial sites listed in the Register of Cultural Heritage. A historic chapel stands in the center of the cemetery.
