Širmė Hillfort is located on the right bank of the Virvyčia River, in the present-day Janapolė area, on the western shore of the former Biržulis Lake. The first inhabitants settled in this area during the Mesolithic period, and later, in the Late Neolithic and Bronze Age, the site became an intensively populated settlement zone.
Širmė Hill is the summit of a massif of several hills. Four Stone Age settlements and traces of fortified settlements from the second half of the 1st millennium have been found here. Archaeological finds include a variety of ceramics from different periods, iron axes, and an Alexander denarius from 1492–1506. These artifacts indicate that from the 12th to the 16th centuries, this site was an important regional center, possibly the beginning of the old Viržuvėnai.
