During World War II, on the night of June 24–25, 1941, Soviet regime officials transported 76 political prisoners from Telšiai prison to the Rainiai forest, where they were brutally murdered. After the war, during the Soviet occupation, efforts were made to erase the memory of this tragedy—the Rainiai forest was cleared, and the chapel that had been started was destroyed. However, the horrific event remained deeply etched in the memory of the people.

After the war, during the Soviet occupation, efforts were made to erase the memory of this tragedy—the Rainiai forest was cleared, and the chapel that had been started was destroyed. However, the horrific event remained deeply etched in the memory of the people.
In 1991, on the 50th anniversary of the Rainiai tragedy, the Chapel of Rainiai Martyrdom was consecrated to commemorate not only this event but also all victims of Soviet terror. The chapel's ceiling is adorned with frescoes created by artist A. Kmieliauskas, depicting the suffering of the martyrs, while the stained glass windows, crafted by artist A. Dovydėnas, symbolize the history of their suffering. Next to the chapel, a cross was erected in Rainiai forest to mark the location where the prisoners were tortured to death.
