Žemaičių Kalvarija (St. John's Hill) Hillfort

St. John's Hill, known as the Žemaičių Kalvarija Hillfort, is a historic site dating back from the 1st millennium to the 13th century. The hill once hosted the Gardai Curonian Castle and the first St. John's Chapel of the Gardai parish. Today, the site is distinguished by two Stations of the Cross chapels located on the hill and a 0.5-hectare settlement at its base. Important archaeological excavations were conducted here in 1903 by L. Kšivickis, in 1964 by the Lithuanian Institute of History, and in 2004 by an expedition led by B. Dakanis, which uncovered ceramic fragments that attest to the ancient communities that once lived here.
