Tallinn Town Hall Square is the heart of the Old Town and one of the city’s oldest squares, first mentioned in the 13th century. In the Middle Ages, it was the main marketplace where fairs, markets, and civic celebrations were held. The square is surrounded by Gothic and later-period merchants’ houses, cafés, and shops, with the impressive Tallinn Town Hall – the only surviving Gothic town hall in Northern Europe – standing at its center. The square is famous for its Christmas tree: the first one was erected here in 1441, making it one of the oldest such traditions in Europe. Today, the square remains the center of city life, hosting festivals, concerts, the Christmas market, and various events that attract both tourists and locals.
