The Sigulda Livonian Order Castle is the oldest castle in the Sigulda region, its construction beginning in 1207 as a fortress of the Sword Brethren Order. In the 13th century, it was transformed into a convent-type castle with an inner courtyard and defensive towers. During the wars of the 17th century, the castle was destroyed, but in the 19th-century Romantic era it came to be seen as picturesque ruins. In 2011–2012, EU-supported reconstruction works were carried out – the southern and northern towers were opened, sections of the walls restored, and tourist routes included. From the towers, visitors can enjoy impressive views of the Gauja Valley, while the courtyard hosts annual festivals and concerts, including the International Sigulda Opera Festival.
