Alytus Town Hall Square is the city’s central space where signs of different historical periods intertwine. Before World War II, it was known as Market Square, bustling with trade and surrounded by early 20th-century residential and commercial buildings. During the Soviet era, it was called Komsomol Square, but in 1990, the historical name Town Hall Square was officially restored. The current town hall building began construction in 1987 and was completed in 1989. The square has retained its triangular shape and today serves as one of the city’s main public spaces, hosting celebrations, events, and gatherings. Although the surrounding old buildings were demolished, the square’s historical spirit is still palpable.
