Cēsis Old Town is a place where the spirit of the Middle Ages still lives on. Though wars and fires destroyed many original structures over the centuries, the layout of the old town has remained nearly unchanged – narrow, winding streets still encircle the castle and St. John's Church. Today, you can explore historic sites such as the 13th-century St. John's Church, the Town Hall, merchants’ houses, and residences of noblewomen. Cozy shops and artisan workshops now occupy the ground floors of many old buildings. Cēsis was first mentioned in 1206, and received town rights in 1323. It served as the residence of the Livonian Order’s Master, was a member of the Hanseatic League, and had its own mint. This is not only architectural heritage but a living story of history.
