In Palanga, at the intersection of Meilės Alley and J. Simpson Street, stands a monument to James Young Simpson—a diplomat who led the 1921 arbitration commission that facilitated Palanga’s return to Lithuania.
To mark the 100th anniversary in 2021, the Palanga Municipality announced a competition for the monument’s design, won by sculptor Sergejus Plotnikovas and architect Saulius Druskis. The monument was ceremoniously unveiled on July 3, 2021, with the participation of President Gitanas Nausėda.
This historical symbol serves as a reminder that peaceful dialogue and diplomatic solutions foster strong international relations, and that Palanga remains an integral part of Lithuania’s history.
