Sculpture "Jūratė and Kastytis"

The sculpture "Jūratė and Kastytis," created by N. Gaigalaitė in 1959 and erected in 1961 near the pedestrian bridge to the sea, is based on the Lithuanian legend of the goddess Jūratė and the fisherman Kastytis. According to the legend, Kastytis, a brave fisherman, cast his net into the Baltic Sea and defied Jūratė's will. The goddess, impressed by his courage, surfaced, and they fell in love. However, Perkūnas, angered by the goddess’s love for a mortal, destroyed the amber palace, killed Kastytis, and chained Jūratė to the ruins. It is said that Jūratė's tears are small pieces of amber, which the sea occasionally washes ashore. The sculpture has become an important symbol of Palanga.
