Jūratė and Kastytis Square is one of the most visited places in Palanga, located near J. Basanavičius Street and the bridge. Here stands a sculpture by artist Nijolė Gaigalaitė, depicting the legendary sea goddess Jūratė and the fisherman Kastytis.

The legend tells of their love, which was destroyed by the wrath of the god Perkūnas – Jūratė's amber palace was destroyed, and Kastytis perished. According to local folklore, Jūratė remained lying near the ruins of the palace, while Kastytis was chained to the sea floor.

This romantic sculpture is adorned with the splashes of a fountain, particularly impressive at noon when the water reflects the silhouettes of the lovers. The square is a place to stop, relax, and enjoy the beauty of Lithuanian culture and nature.

Jūratė and Kastytis Square, located near J. Basanavičius Street and the Palanga Bridge, is one of the most visited spots in the city. In this square, between the hustle and bustle of the town and the calmness of the dunes, stands the famous sculpture depicting the sea goddess Jūratė and the fisherman Kastytis. The sculpture was created by the renowned artist Nijolė Gaigalaitė, inspired by a Lithuanian folk legend. The legend tells of the love between Jūratė and Kastytis, which angered the god of thunder, Perkūnas. Jūratė's amber palace was destroyed, Kastytis perished, and Jūratė's salty tears turned into sea water. According to the local version, Jūratė remained lying lifeless next to the ruins of the palace, while Kastytis was chained to the sea floor. This sculpture looks particularly
stunning against the backdrop of the fountain, especially at noon when the water reflects the silhouettes of the lovers. The fountain has become a popular spot not only for tourists but also for locals – a perfect place to stop, relax, and reflect on the power of the elements and human emotions. The sculpture's history also has a down-to-earth side. It is said that Jūratė was modeled after the artist's coursemate, and two models posed for Kastytis – a professional model and an athletic lifeguard from Palanga. The artist aimed for her works to inspire life and creativity, conveying human strength. Jūratė and Kastytis Square is a place where romance, myths, and art come together, creating a unique atmosphere that invites one to immerse in the beauty of Lithuanian culture and nature.
