The sculpture "Boy with a Galosh," located on Basanavičius Street in Vilnius, is a tribute to the world-renowned writer Romain Gary, who was born and raised in this city. Created by sculptor Romualdas Kvintas, the piece was inspired by Gary’s autobiographical novel "Promise at Dawn," in which he describes his childhood in Vilnius and his mother’s unconditional love.
Romain Gary remains the only writer to have won the prestigious Prix Goncourt twice—though the second time he wrote under the pseudonym Émile Ajar. The sculpture also portrays a charming childhood love story: in an attempt to prove his feelings to a girl named Valentina, the boy even dared to eat a rubber galosh! This monument stands as a symbol of Vilnius' connection to world literature.
