In Palanga, on Vytauto Street, near the memorial homestead of Dr. Jonas Šliūpas, stands a monument dedicated to this prominent figure. Created by sculptors A. Toleikis and D. Lukoševičius, and architect J. Galdikienė, it was unveiled in 2003. Jonas Šliūpas (1861–1944) was a doctor of medicine, humanities, and law, a defender of Lithuanian press and national rights, and the first mayor of Palanga. The nearby memorial homestead, a branch of the Lithuanian National Museum, offers a deeper insight into the life and struggle of this important figure in strengthening Lithuanian identity.
