The sculpture "The Girl" in Palanga, located on Vytauto Street, was created by sculptor V. A. Vertulienė and commemorates the Palanga pioneer camp, which suffered during the early days of World War II in 1941. The camp hosted children, including Jewish children. The girls stayed in one building, while the boys stayed in another. The camp operated for only two weeks, as the war began on June 22, 1941, and the children were evacuated to Latvia. Some later returned to Palanga, where they were imprisoned in the synagogue. The sculpture "The Girl" honors the memory of these children and was known as "The Pioneer" during the Soviet era.
