The Vilnius 650th anniversary monument was unveiled in 1973 in Cathedral Square, marking the first official mention of the city’s name on January 25, 1323, when Grand Duke Gediminas invited the West to Vilnius. This stone, inscribed with "Vilnius 1323–1973," symbolizes the long and significant history of the city. The stone, with a rectangular groove, is located between the monument to Gediminas and a newsstand, and it is an important commemorative object for the city of Vilnius. Before the restoration of independence, the stone had an additional inscription in Cyrillic letters, which was removed after 1990. This monument is an essential part of Vilnius' history, serving not only as a tourist attraction but also as a symbol that connects the past with the present.
