In 1911, a volunteer fire brigade building was constructed in Šilutė on a plot of land donated by Hugo Šojus. Once a marshy and low-lying area in Šilokarčema, near the now-vanished Šret Stream, the modernist-style building with its preserved original decor has withstood two world wars and served the town for over a century. Until 2020, it housed the Šilutė Fire Department, which has since moved to new premises. This building remains a significant historical and architectural symbol of Šilutė.

The establishment of a volunteer fire brigade in 1897 was a notable event in the life of Šilokarčema County. Hugo Šojus, the owner of the Šilutė Manor, donated the land where the fire station was built in 1911. At the time, the site was the lowest and most marshy part of Šilokarčema, located near the Šret Stream, which no longer exists today. The fire station featured a garage on the ground floor and administrative offices on the second floor. Initially, the brigade consisted of volunteer firefighters equipped
with a single hand pump and four horses. Designed in a modernist style, the building reflects the restrained yet elegant architecture characteristic of the Klaipėda region. It survived both world wars and has retained its original appearance for over 100 years. Until 2020, the historic building was home to the Šilutė Fire and Rescue Service, which later relocated to newly constructed facilities near the old fire station. The building remains an important symbol of Šilutė’s architectural and historical heritage.
