The history of the Šilutė post office dates back to 1594, when a tavern was granted the privilege of keeping a postal horse. In 1718, the first post station was established in Šilokarčema (now Šilutė), serving the important Klaipėda–Tilžė postal route. The modern post office building, constructed in 1909, is a two-story brick structure with a mansard roof and an impressive main entrance, considered one of the finest architectural landmarks in the city. Postal services were provided here until 2023.

The story of the Šilokarčema (present-day Šilutė) post office began in 1594, when the local tavern was granted a unique privilege: the innkeeper had to maintain a postal horse or pay an annual fee of 8 marks. At the time, postal routes ran from tavern to tavern, delivering letters, parcels, and even passengers. Šilokarčema was a crucial stop on the Klaipėda–Tilžė postal route, and in 1718, the Klaipėda postal administration established the first post station here. In 1850, postal services were leased, and the tenant of the Šilokarčema
post was the local manor owner, Radke. With the opening of the Tilžė–Klaipėda railway in 1875, horse-drawn postal services became obsolete and were discontinued. The modern Šilutė post office building was constructed in 1909 and became one of the city's architectural gems. This two-story brick building, rectangular in plan with a mansard roof, features a complex volumetric composition and an elegant main entrance. Postal services operated here until 2023, and the building remains a significant witness to Šilutė's history.
