The roots of the Šilutė First Gymnasium trace back to 1864 when a higher boys' school was established in Šilokarčema. In 1918, the Herder Gymnasium was opened and later moved in 1930 to a newly constructed building designed by architect Kurt Gutknecht on a plot of land donated by Hugo Šojus. The Herder Gymnasium operated until 1944, and after the war, it became Šilutė First Gymnasium. In 2004, the school was renamed Šilutė First Gymnasium, preserving its historical significance to the town.

In 1864, a higher boys' school, also known as a family school, was founded in Šilokarčema. Later, in 1917, locals formed a committee to establish a gymnasium, and on April 16, 1918, the Šilokarčema Gymnasium-Lyceum opened its doors under the name Herder Gymnasium. The first graduating class completed their studies in 1926. In 1928, construction of a new school building began. The site was donated by the renowned landowner and cultural patron Hugo Šojus, and the building was designed by local architect
Kurt Gutknecht. The Herder Gymnasium building was officially opened on October 11, 1930, becoming a modern hub for education. The gymnasium operated successfully until the fall of 1944. After World War II, the building housed Šilutė First Gymnasium, which later became a secondary school. To emphasize its historical importance, the school was renamed Šilutė First Gymnasium in 2004. It remains an integral part of the town's cultural and educational heritage, reflecting deep-rooted traditions.
