The Katyčiai Evangelical Lutheran Church, built in 1734 from stone and brick, has endured many historical challenges. In 1801, a tornado destroyed its tower, and in 1894, it was renovated, acquiring a strict rectangular shape and a reinforced wooden tower with three bells, one of which was a gift from Queen Louise of Prussia. In 1955, the church was nationalized by the Soviet authorities, converted into a cinema, and its altar, pulpit, bells, and crypts were destroyed. After 1958, the church was returned to the faithful, and in 1994 it was restored, with the bell tower rebuilt, a new bell installed, and services resumed.

Established in 1734 near the old cemetery, the Katyčiai Evangelical Lutheran Church stands as an important witness to the town’s history and culture. Built from fieldstone and brick, its wooden tower was a significant architectural feature, though it was destroyed by a powerful tornado in 1801. In 1894, the church underwent major reconstruction, gaining a strict rectangular shape (25 meters long and 12 meters wide) and a renewed wooden tower with a tent-shaped roof. The tower housed three bells, one of which was a gift from Queen Louise of Prussia, and they rang until 1955. During the Soviet era, the church suffered tragic transformations. In 1955, it was
nationalized and converted into a cinema. The altar, pulpit, organ, and crypts beneath the floor were destroyed. The bell tower was demolished, and the bells were removed—Queen Louise’s bell was shattered, and its fate remains unknown. Local residents protested this transformation by refusing to attend the cinema, leading to the church’s return to the Evangelical Lutheran community in 1958. Restoration efforts spanned many years. By 1994, the church had been fully restored, with the bell tower rebuilt and a new bell installed. Today, the church once again hosts Evangelical Lutheran services, continuing its role as a vital part of the Katyčiai community.
