In the center of Žemaičių Naumiestis, a monument titled “To Those Who Died for Lithuania’s Freedom” was erected in 1928. This two-tier obelisk, crowned with a top resembling the Gediminas Tower, was built from stone masonry and concrete. In 1951, under orders from the Soviet authorities, the monument was demolished and buried. Nearly four decades later, in October 1988, thanks to the efforts of the local community, the monument was unearthed and restored. Today, this historical symbol serves as a reminder of Lithuania’s struggles for freedom and the spirit of rebirth.

In the heart of Žemaičių Naumiestis, the 1928 monument “To Those Who Died for Lithuania’s Freedom” stands as a testament to the sacrifices made in the pursuit of independence. Featuring a two-tier obelisk with a distinctive Gediminas Tower-shaped pinnacle, the structure was constructed from stone masonry and concrete, embodying Lithuania's aspirations for freedom and the ultimate sacrifices made. Unfortunately, during the Soviet occupation in 1951, the monument was destroyed and buried, an attempt to erase its significance and suppress the nation's memory. Yet, the Lithuanian spirit of freedom
remained unyielding. In October 1988, during the rise of the Sąjūdis movement, local residents took action to excavate and restore the monument. Skilled craftsmen contributed to its reconstruction, reviving this essential symbol that today represents both historical memory and national unity. The monument has become a key attraction in Žemaičių Naumiestis, drawing tourists and history enthusiasts eager to connect with the spirit of Lithuania’s fight for freedom. This site is a remarkable example of how community dedication can restore symbols of the past and preserve them for future generations.
