In 1843, under the initiative of Count Pranciškus Plater, the Švėkšnalė River was dammed, and a watermill was constructed within the Vilkėnas Manor complex. After a flood in 1891, the mill was restored, and in 1936, a diesel engine was installed to ensure operation during water shortages. The watermill remained functional until 1964. In 1993, the manor was returned to the Plater family descendants, and by 1995, the mill underwent a major renovation. Today, the watermill has been reborn as a hotel and restaurant, inviting visitors to experience the historic heritage of Vilkėnas Manor.
