The Church of St. Michael the Archangel is one of the most prominent examples of 18th-century wooden folk architecture in Samogitia. The sacred structure was built in 1782 by the town's administrator, Mykolas Ronikeris, and consecrated in 1790 by Bishop Juozapas Koscia of Samogitia, who dedicated it to St. Michael the Archangel. It stands atop the historic Vanagai Hillfort, also known as Green Hill, which is listed as an archaeological heritage site. This cruciform wooden structure with a small turret at the roof’s intersection showcases a blend of folk architecture and Neo-Gothic elements. Inside, visitors can admire unique works of art, including ancient religious paintings,
three altars, a distinctive pulpit, an organ, and two ornate 19th-century iron crosses. Wooden sculptures, such as Christ at the Column, Crucified Jesus, and Jesus of Nazareth, dating to the early 20th century, reflect the continuation of sacred art traditions. The churchyard features a wooden chapel post with a decorative iron cross, erected in 1890, enhancing the authenticity of the church's surroundings. This sacred architectural ensemble remains not only an important site for prayer but also a cultural heritage landmark, attracting both worshippers and tourists. The church community actively ensures its preservation, acquiring a new bell in 2006 as part of their efforts.
