Piliakalniai Hillfort, located in the Bartninkai Eldership, is a site of historical significance dating back to the 5th–14th centuries. According to J. Basanavičius, it may have been the location of the legendary Pilėnai Castle, a theory supported by archaeological findings and the nearby villages of Margai and Peleniai.
Discoveries at the hillfort include iron spearheads, bronze brooches, and fragments of wheel-thrown pottery, now housed in the National Museum of Lithuania. Restoration work carried out in 2003 transformed the hillfort into one of the most visited sites in the Marijampolė region.
