Auksūdžio Hillfort, also known as Kūlių Pilale or Swedish Hillfort, is hidden in the Pilalė Forest, on the left bank of the Darbos River, near the Dainiškiai swamps. This ancient defensive fortification, dated to the 1st millennium, is shrouded in tales and legends. Although the hillfort is difficult to locate due to the dense forest and barely visible embankments, its history attracts travelers.
It is said that the embankment was built by the Swedes, who established their military headquarters here. There are also stories of a manor that is said to have sunk into the ground, only occasionally resurfacing. The legend also mentions a young devil who used to play a game of ripka with shepherds, but after being struck by a rowan stick, he vanished forever. In Kūlių Pilale, mysterious flames would often mislead people, and on the nights of seasonal festivals, the laumes (forest spirits) would wash clothes in the Devil’s Mill, which once stood nearby.
