The Joskaudų Hillfort, also known as Alkos or Aukos Hill, rises in the valley of the Tenžė River and is steeped in ancient legends. It is believed that the Curonians once made sacrifices to their gods on this hillfort, burning offerings on the Altar Stone, which was located at the summit of the hill. Unfortunately, the stone disappeared in the mid-20th century when gravel was being extracted from the southeastern part of the hillfort. Legends say that a beautiful manor once sank into the hill, leaving a depression, from which little demons were said to appear occasionally.
In 1941, a tragic historical event took place on the Joskaudų Hillfort and its foothills – 510 Jews, imprisoned in the Dimitravas forced labor camp, were executed. Today, the memory of the Holocaust victims is preserved by memorial stones marking their graves.
