The Dimitravas Prison, located in the Kretinga district, is a unique historical site established during interwar Lithuania with the approval of the Seimas. The buildings of the former Dimitravas Manor were adapted for a prison intended for both criminal and political prisoners. In many cases, the evidence of their guilt was dubious. At one point, up to 200 individuals were imprisoned here, forced to break stones used for paving highways and city streets.
During World War II, the Nazis took over the prison, and the Jews sent to Dimitravas became a tragic part of its history. Under the Soviet regime, the former prison buildings housed a military camp and a collective farm. Today, the suffering experienced here is commemorated by a sculpture titled "Political Prisoners," created by Antanas Dimžlys. This place serves as a mirror of historical events, drawing in those curious to explore the twists and turns of interwar Lithuania, the occupations, and the history of the war.
