Emilija Pliaterytė, a 19th-century freedom fighter, was born in Vilnius on November 13, 1806, and died in Kapčiamiestis on December 23, 1831. She came from the renowned Plater family and actively participated in the 1831 uprising, earning the title of the "Joan of Arc of Lithuania." Together with her cousin Cezaris Plater, Emilija gathered a group of insurgents who fought in battles in Zarasai, Radviliškis, Vilnius County, and Kaunas. While retreating through Suvalkija toward Warsaw, Pliaterytė was injured, and as her health declined, she and her allies found shelter in the forester Margelis’s cabin. Taken to Vainežeris Manor, owned by Ignotas Ablamavičius, Emilija passed away. Her body was secretly transported at night along the Baltoji Ančia River and buried in Kapčiamiestis Cemetery. A monument in her memory stands in the center of Kapčiamiestis and in the cemetery.
